Sorgeist was the now defunct neo-classical solo project of French musician Sébastien Leduc. This 2002 single was Sorgeist’s debut release, and it was intended to be followed by an album entitled Détruisez Ce Qu’ils Ont Construit, Ramenez Ce Qu’ils Ont Tué, but this was never in fact released, and this single was Sorgeist’s only release, apart from a couple of compilation tracks.

The A-side is ‘Les Roses Du Matin’, a mournful instrumental composition of creaking, ancient sounding violins and muted drums. The B-side is ‘Der Weinende Hadnur’, which is actually a cover of Burzum’s song ‘The Crying Orc’, which appears on the first Burzum album. The original version is a short guitar instrumental, but Sorgeist’s version is rendered on keyboards, which makes it sound like Burzum’s later ambient work, or other ambient projects with black metal inclinations, such as Vinterriket or Ulver.

Hau Ruck! did a very nice job with the packaging of this limited edition single, which comes in a matt finish colour sleeve depicting decaying statuary. I believe some copies of this were pressed on pink vinyl, but mine is just plain (very) heavy black vinyl. Sorgeist has now been superseded by Totenlieder, who released Negative Kharma in 2006.
